BRONX CHARTER SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS, HUNTS POINT, BRONX, NY
Located in an industrial area now largely deserted by industry, the adapative reuse of an old factory building creates an airy school for K-6 students. Natural light is introduced into every classroom space by perforating the existing street side brick wall with windows and creating six North facing skylights into the roof. Within a low budget, everyday materials bring the building and it's spaces to life by coordinating readily available colored bricks and vinyl floor tile into lively stripes, appropirately animating a school for young children.
The design has won an AIA Honor Award, the K12 Award from AIA Boston Chapter, and has been widely published, including the New York Times and Architectrual Record
